How Far Can a Brand Stretch?
For a leading U.S. vitamin & supplement brand, we built a consumer-led roadmap for growth beyond its established core.
The Challenge
A leading U.S. vitamin & supplement brand was exploring a wide range of potential growth spaces - from closely adjacent health products to targeted solutions, digital health technology, and emerging models of personalized wellness. The challenge wasn't generating possibilities; it was determining where the brand had genuine consumer permission to play, which opportunities could create meaningful growth, and how far the brand could credibly stretch.
What We Did
We surveyed 1,560 U.S. consumers and evaluated more than 20 potential expansion opportunities through an integrated framework encompassing consumer demand, brand permission, brand growth potential, category growth potential, and potential brand halo. Consumers evaluated the opportunities most relevant to them in depth, allowing us to understand not simply which spaces were appealing, but what kind of value each space could create for the brand.
What We Uncovered
No single expansion opportunity won on every measure.
Brand permission and market potential don't always move together.
Familiar spaces can offer an easier route to near-term growth, while less familiar spaces may create different forms of strategic value.
Growth opportunities need to be evaluated for incrementality and impact on the core - not just consumer interest.
The strongest growth plan was a sequence of moves, not simply a ranked list of categories.
The Impact
We translated more than 20 possibilities into a prioritized portfolio of near-term opportunities, strategic stretches, and longer-range bets. For priority spaces, we went deeper into consumer needs, product and formulation opportunities, differentiation, and early innovation territories - giving the team a research-backed roadmap for where to focus now, where to build permission over time, and what to explore next.
